1,500 kilometers of trust: how Bosch Engineering is bringing the smart tire under control
A 1,500-kilometer road trip in the Pagani Utopia Roadster is an impressive demonstration of a new level of vehicle dynamics control. Under real conditions, the journey demonstrated the performance and capabilities of our production-ready system solution. It made clear that only through the systems expertise of Bosch Engineering can the information from the smart tire – the direct link to the road – be converted into precise, safe, and controllable vehicle operation.

1,500 km across Europe behind the wheel of the Pagani Utopia Roadster, equipped with Pirelli Cyber™ Tyre technology.
The challenge: from vision to mountain pass
The key challenge for any vehicle dynamics system lies in the diversity of real-world conditions. A hypercar like the Pagani Utopia is driven with different tire types – from summer and winter tires to semi-slicks. In their application, conventional ESP systems must find a compromise based on assumptions to meet all the various requirements. The Cyber™ Tyre system resolves precisely this compromise.
"For over twenty years, our research has been guided by Leonardo's principle of art and science," states Horacio Pagani, founder of Pagani Automobili. "A hypercar must not only be fast, but also a work of art that inspires confidence and safety in those who drive it. Pirelli Cyber™ Tyre gives each tire the sensitivity of a human hand. It senses the asphalt and communicates with the electronic heart of the Pagani Utopia Roadster to transform every meter into a moment of absolute control. For us, Pirelli is a partner and a friend who shares our passion for safety. Together, we have given a voice to the contact point between dream and road."
The journey over alpine passes impressively demonstrates this approach of a smart tire. The system enables specific and precisely tailored control for every situation – whether at 5°C and in wet conditions or on hot asphalt. The aim is to actively manage the physical limits through precise data and to make the full potential of the vehicle safely accessible.
Our role: the conductor in the digital orchestra
The Cyber™ Tyre provides the precise data basis. Our work begins where data needs to be fed into the overall system of the vehicle and orchestrated. As a "conductor," we ensure that the information does not remain isolated, but intelligently influences the regulation of all components involved. We translate the tire data into concrete, physically implementable commands for the vehicle dynamics actuators. This requires an in-depth understanding of systems and the ability to develop customized software applications for extreme requirements.
"The development of Cyber™ Tyre technology is the concrete realization of a vision that arose more than twenty years ago," explains Piero Misani, Chief Technical Officer of Pirelli. "The tire can evolve from a passive element to an active sensor that generates data and not only transmits forces. Together with partners such as Pagani Automobili and Bosch, we have launched a new era of digital safety and performance. This serves as proof that this pioneering idea was the right path."
The result: precision without compromise – data instead of assumptions
The result of the integration is more precise vehicle stabilization without any application compromises. Thanks to the "tire ID" function, the ESP automatically recognizes the mounted tire set and can apply a peak performance application precisely tailored to this set. This optimizes the system for each specific tire in any given situation and thereby increases safety, as was consistently demonstrated over the 1,500 km route.
"The integration of Cyber™ Tyre into the Utopia Roadster and the activation of the functions developed together with Bosch confirm the technical maturity of our solution," outlines Corrado Rocca, Head of Pirelli Cyber. "We provide parameters based on the actual characteristics of the tire mounted on the vehicle. This allows the onboard electronics to work more precisely, thus improving both safety and performance."
In addition, critical data such as tire temperature and pressure are displayed to the driver via an HMI interface. The system also meets the legal requirements for a tire pressure monitoring system.
We offer an open, fundamental modular system that unlocks the potential of the most critical link to the road and is available to the market as a means of enhancing driving pleasure, vehicle dynamics, and safety in equal measure.
A partnership of equals – with perfect interplay between specialists
The success of this project demonstrates how the interplay of clearly focused competencies leads to an unprecedented solution. The seamless integration of Pirelli's tire expertise, Pagani's visionary vehicle concept, and Bosch Engineering's systems expertise produces an overall system that is far greater than the sum of its parts. Such a partnership of equals is key to bringing technological innovation to volume production readiness in a robust and reliable manner.
Dr. Johannes-Jörg Rüger, CEO of Bosch Engineering, is enthusiastic about the partnership: "We are proud to collaborate with an innovator like Pirelli and combine its groundbreaking Cyber™ Tyre technology with our in-depth expertise in vehicle dynamics. This cooperation unlocks the full potential of smart tires. Seeing it come to life in an automotive masterpiece like the Pagani Utopia Roadster allows us to set new standards for performance, safety, and an unparalleled driving experience."
